9/11: A picture is worth 1,000 thank-yous

I wasn’t going to write about 9/11. For a small-business blog, it just seemed tacky or exploitative.

But on the 10th anniversary of the attacks, my neighborhood was awash in firefighters in full dress uniform. I live around the corner from the 1927 Firemen’s Memorial, and firefighters from the around the world had come to pay their respects.

Early this morning, I went out to snap some pictures, read the tributes, and meditate on bravery and sacrifice.

I’m still not going to write about 9/11, but I hope these photos are worth 1,000 words … 1,000 thank-yous, to be precise.

  1. Beautiful photos Robert. This is where a picture DOES speak and is worth a thousand words. A good friend of mine lives in Lower Manhattan, 2 blocks from the former WTC. I remember this day like it was last month. On a positive note though, my daughter April was born on September 11, 1988 so every September 11th manages to bring joy into my life.

Hi, Annette, thank you for the feedback. I love that you have a positive memory to balance the tragedy of that day. I was actually challenged on this 10th anniversary to do something positive each year on Sept. 11 — something to bring joy on an otherwise sad day for many. After all, life shouldn’t just “go on” … it should get better.
